چکیده

We propose the use of self-defocusing nonlinearities to control nonlinear phase shifts in soliton fiber lasers. By analogy to dispersion management, we refer to this scheme as nonlinearity management. First we describe a map that can be regarded as a combination of nonlinearity management and dispersion management. The map is designed to support solitons in two segments of alternating sign of nonlinearity and dispersion. Analytical and numerical calculations demonstrate that this map can be essentially free of spectral-sideband generation. Suppressing the spectral sidebands should make possible pulse energies 100 times greater than those of existing soliton fiber lasers. We also discuss the less than ideal case of direct reduction of average nonlinearity by use of self-defocusing nonlinearity segments without optimizing dispersion. The second scheme has the advantage of easier implementation. Practical implementations with existing materials are discussed. © 2002 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 320.7090, 320.5540, 060.5530.

Sub-100-fs 1.87 GHz mode-locked fiber laser using stretched-soliton effects

Current pulsed fiber lasers that are capable of delivering stable sub-100-fs pulses at megahertz repetition rates require intracavity pulse energies in the nanojoule range. Scaling these lasers to gigahertz repetition rates necessitates, therefore, very high average power levels and complex cladding-pumped configurations. Here we report a type of stretchedsoliton all-fiber laser that generates ...

This report introduces principles of fiber lasers passively mode-locked by nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). Dispersion and nonlinearity management of the laser cavity play an essential role in determining the laser operation state. Different soliton operation of the laser is discussed. Taking advantage of weak soltion restriment of per-pulse energy of postive net cavity dispersion cavity,...

Environmentally stable high-power soliton fiber lasers that use chirped fiber Bragg gratings.

Environmentally stable high-power erbium fiber soliton lasers are constructed by Kerr or carrier-type mode locking. We obtain high-energy pulses by using relatively short fiber lengths and providing large amounts of negative dispersion with chirped fiber Bragg gratings. The pulse energies and widths generated with both types of soliton laser are found to scale with the square root of the cavity...
